- Title | you and i are a story (that never gets told) sing_song_sung
Chapter | one
Rating | pg-13
Characters | Blair + Dan. Nate, Serena, Eric. Cameos by others.
Summary | Give me back my future, Blair had thought. You take everything from me.
Notes | Canon applies for all episodes of Gossip Girl up to the s4 finale. This fic is loosely based on the movie Life As We Know It. I do not own these characters, etc, etc. Title is from a Taylor Swift song.
The walls are pale blue.
It's been years since Blair Waldorf was in the halls of Constance Billard's primary schools, but she's certain that the walls were some shade of off-white when she was a child. She frowns, her heels click-clacking an even pattern on the tiled floor as she walks briskly through the halls. She doesn't have the time to be thinking about walls; she should be in a meeting right now, and she's already dreading the harried look on her assistant's face when she gets back to the office. She'll probably be up all night. Of course Serena would do this to her today, of all days.
The children are easy to spot. She's still taken aback sometimes by how fair they all are: hair the colour of honey, eyes the colour of cornflowers, skin that would be pale if not for that perpetually sun-kissed quality they share with their mother.
"B!" Ella is on her feet in an instant, running over for a hug.
Blair sighs softly, leaning down to wrap an arm around the girl. "Sorry to keep you waiting, darling," she says, dropping a kiss on top of the little girl's head. She glances up at Ella's sisters. "Ready to go home?"
Joey's mouth is puckered, the corners of her lips turned downward. Her legs swing into the air; her feet don't even come close to touching the floor. "Mommy forgot us," she says softly.
"Mommy didn't forget you," Blair says patiently. "Mommy…had an important meeting," she lies, "and she will see you this evening."
Lilah scoffs. She's slumped in her chair, a sullen look on her face. "Mom's a photographer. They don't have important meetings."
Blair resists the urge to sigh again. Sometimes, she's awed by how very much Lilah reminds her of her best friend; at other times, she finds it incredibly frustrating. Lilah is just another girl in a line of Rhodes women too much likes their mothers. "You'll see your mother later," she says firmly, straightening up. "Come on, up you get. Let's go home."
The secretary taps a few keys on her computer. "You're Ms. Waldorf, I presume?"
Ella beams. "My Auntie B!" she tells the secretary proudly.
Blair touches her hair gently as the secretary smiles, lifting her gaze to Blair's face. "I'll need to see a piece of ID before I can let you take the children."
She resists the urge to snap at the secretary – she has too many other things to think about, all of them more important than security regulations at a private school. She slips her ID out of her purse and hands it over. "Lilah, up," she says firmly, and her niece just looks at her, scowling Serena's scowl, brows drawn together and lips halfway to a pout.
"I'll leave without you," Blair says blithely, herding Ella and Joey toward the door.
"No, you won't."
"Today is not the day to test me, Delilah Anne," she says, losing patience. "Get out of that chair or spend the night in it – it's your choice."
She stays where she is defiantly for a few more seconds before she stands and follows her sisters reluctantly.
"Thank you," Blair tells the secretary politely. She can feel a headache starting to build behind her eyes. When Serena had asked if she was willing to be the emergency contact for the girls, she'd said yes without thinking about it, but she'd assumed that she would never actually have to do anything unless there was a real emergency.
"Auntie B," Joey murmurs, tugging at the hem of her pencil skirt. "I'm hungry."
"We'll have snacks once we're home, sweetheart."
Joey's eyes fill. "I want ice cream."
"Yeah!" Ella cries enthusiastically. "Ice cream!"
Blair stops for a moment in the hallway and looks at them: Joey with her hands balled into fists and tears sliding down her cheeks, Ella with a big smile and all the hope in the world in her eyes, Lilah frowning and quiet.
She takes a tissue out of her purse and crouches down to help Joey blow her nose. "Ice cream," she agrees, and the little girl gives her a tentative smile. Blair smiles back. "Oh, honey, your mommy owes me for today," she murmurs before she pulls the girl into a hug.
The girls go running upstairs, giggling and hyped up on sugar, when they get to the house.
"Serena?" Blair calls uncertainly.
A woman three or four years younger than Blair emerges from the kitchen, confused painted plainly on her face and a little boy following her closely. "You are…?" she asks.
The boy answers, throwing his arms up. "B!" he says happily.
She reaches down to gather him into her arms. "Hello, sweetheart." She turns to the baby-sitter. "I'm their aunt. Serena…went out this afternoon?"
"Around noon," the baby-sitter says, nodding. "I was expecting her back about forty-five minutes ago."
"She must have planned to pick the girls up and then come home," Blair muses as her nephew leans his head against her shoulder. She smiles at the little boy. "Something must have come up. Mommy's easily distracted."
"Should I stay longer?" the sitter asks.
Blair shakes her head. She's here now and she might as well stay. "No, it's fine." She sets her nephew down. "Just let me get my chequebook, I'll pay you."
She calls Serena several times, and gets nothing but her voicemail. She tries Nate, too, with the same results.
By dinnertime, she's halfway to furious. She tells the girls she'll order pizza for them. It takes much longer than it should, because Joey insists that it's Daddy's night to make dinner and Lilah curls into a corner of the couch and says Mom totally forgot us, didn't she? and Ella really wants pineapple on her pizza, despite the fact that both of her sisters say that pineapple on pizza is disgusting. Bram is the only agreeable one, but he's younger and he doesn't quite understand, and his eyes are starting to get big as he tugs at Blair's sleeve and asks for his mommy.
Blair's exhausted. She's been up early and at Vogue's offices since eight. She'd had a full day even before she'd picked the girls up, and here she was, trying to plan dinner for Serena's children.
She leaves them in the living room with the television on and places the pizza order before dialling Serena's number and waiting impatiently for her voicemail message.
"Serena," she says sharply. "Where the hell are you? Have you forgotten that we're no longer fifteen years old? I am at your house, with your children, because you neglected to pick them up from school. I can't believe how irresponsible you're being – I can't believe you don't have a nanny. Is Nate with you?" She sighs. "I swear to god, Serena, you had better still be in the city – "
She's cut off by the sound of the house phone ringing, and ends the call on her cell without another word, walking over to pick up.
"Hello?" she asks.
There's a pause, and then, "…Blair?"
"Yes," she confirms. "Who – " She stops short. "Eric?"
"Yeah, I…I'm sorry, I didn't even think to call you. Mom just assumed that…there was a sitter."
She's not following his train of thought, but she doesn't bother asking questions. "E, do you know where your sister is?"
Another pause, and then Eric blows out a breath before he says, very softly, "Yes."
Blair waits for him to explain, but he doesn't. "Are you going to tell me?" she prompts impatiently.
He sighs. "Blair…"
"I'm tired, I have an issue to get printed, and I have four kids asking me where their parents are…" She pauses there, but Eric stays quiet. She can hear him breathing. "Is she with Nate?"
And abruptly, Eric starts to cry. It startles her – it has been decades since she's seen Eric van der Woodsen cry. He was probably five or six the last time, standing in her foyer after Lily left her kids to go off on a trip with whomever she was dating at the time. She feels dread start to coil in her stomach. "Eric?" she asks softly.
He makes a choked sound. "Sit down, okay?"
"Eric," she says again, more firmly this time. She doesn't move.
He sighs. "There was an accident."
Blair nods a little and steels herself. "How bad?"
"Bad," he says tightly, and she knows in that instant. She doesn't have to ask him anything else. She glances over her shoulder, into the living room, and sees Lilah, sitting on the couch while her brother and sisters play on the floor.
She grips the edge of the counter for a moment. "Is Nate there?" she asks softly.
The longest silence of their conversation follows her words.
"Eric," she snaps out.
"They were – " He stops to take a breath. " – both in the car."
They're both quiet then, and Blair's fingers are tight around the edge of the counter, knuckles turning white.
"The kids," she whispers.
"I – I'm here with Mom right now, but I'll be there soon, okay? I'll help you – talk to them."
Blair nods slightly, even though he can't see her.
"Okay," she says, because there really isn't anything else.
Eric is pale when he shows up, his hair mussed as though he's been running his hands through it all day.
"E," Blair says softly, standing aside and beckoning him in.
"I was supposed to visit this weekend," he says quietly. "We were going to take the kids to the zoo. I just…we all assumed…that we'd all be here."
Blair nods. It's been about an hour since their phone call and she's spent every minute trying to occupy herself. She made sure the kids ate and put 101 Dalmatians on for them while she did the dishes herself. The movie is still playing in the den, and she can hear them giggling from time to time.
"My mom is – not good," he says softly, his hands shaking as he shrugs off his fall coat. "And Anne is…" He winces at the thought. "Completely hysterical."
"Nate's her only child," Blair says, quietly, numbly, and in the back of her mind she thinks was, was her only child.
"There're…wills to be read, and the kids to think about, and…they were too young," he says quietly, and he suddenly looks very young himself. "Fucking drunk driver."
"Was it…" She's not totally sure what she's trying to ask.
"Nate…on impact," he says in the same quiet voice. "And Serena…after they got to the hospital." He looks miserable, his eyes dark and wet. "They were both gone by the time I got to the city."
There's a burst of laughter from the den, and Ella squeals Jo, don't, and Blair closes her eyes. "It's not…real."
Eric is staring at her sadly when she finally opens her eyes again.
It is. It's real.
The kids sit on the couch, a row of curious blue eyes, when they tell them. Blair and Eric sit across from them in separate chairs, holding hands in the space between them. Eric sounds like he has a frog in his throat, so Blair does most of the talking.
Lilah's eyes are wide and shocked by the time she's done, and Blair expects her to say something, but it's Joey's voice she hears instead.
"No, Auntie B," the four-year-old says, as if Blair is being silly, as if she's made a mistake. "It's Daddy's night to make dinner," she explains.
Blair's heart vaults up into her throat. "Baby, I know," she says very softly, "but Daddy got into an accident, and he was hurt very badly, and…he went to heaven," she ad-libs, because she doesn't know what else you say to a little girl whose father has died. "And he can't make dinner anymore."
Joey's bottom lip trembles. "Never?"
"He's dead, Joey," Lilah says quietly, without looking at her sister.
"Li," Eric says, a gentle reprimand.
She turns her eyes (Serena's eyes) to Blair. "She didn't forget us, then."
"No," Blair whispers. "Your mom would never forget you."
Bram starts to cry. "I want Mommy," he says firmly, through his tears.
Blair lets go of Eric's hand and stands up, walking over to the couch and picking the toddler up. She sits back down in his place and settles him on her lap, reaching an arm out to wrap around Joey's small shoulders. "I know," she tells him soothingly. She watches as Lilah gets up, stomping out of the room, and Ella jumps off the couch and bolts into Eric's arms.
"Mommy," Bram weeps insistently, his face buried in Blair's neck.
She presses a kiss to the top of his head. "Me too," she whispers into his soft blonde hair. "I want her, too."
Bram cries himself to sleep, and Blair tucks him in carefully, turning the nightlight on as she leaves his room. Ella falls asleep in Eric's arms, and he lays her down on the couch, covering her with a blanket. Bleary-eyed and sniffling, Joey crawls underneath the blanket with her sister, and falls asleep once they're huddled together. When Blair goes to check on Lilah, she finds her curled into a ball in the middle of her parents' bed, sleeping fitfully.
Eric offers to take a couch, but Blair insists he take the guest room instead. There's no point in fooling herself into believing that she'll sleep tonight.
She goes to the stairs, thinking that she'll go and make sure Ella and Joey are alright, but she gets stuck once she's taken a couple steps. Serena's obsession with photography has turned the wall that borders the staircase into a gallery. An endless array of happy faces stare out at her.
Serena in her hospital bed, weary smile on her face as she cradles newborn Lilah. Nate holding Bram over his head, both of them grinning widely. All three girls in their school uniforms, making faces. Serena with Ella and Joey on her lap. Lily holding baby Joey. The whole family, before Bram was born – Nate used to call them all my girls. Eric reading to the girls, their eyes wide and intent on his face. Nate and Serena in a photobooth, impossibly young and laughing, her belly round during her pregnancy with Lilah. Proud big sister Lilah holding baby Ella awkwardly. It goes on and on. Blair is in some of the shots, like Lily and Eric, but it's mostly Serena and Nate and the family they built together.
She'd been jealous, once. Serena took to marriage and pregnancy and motherhood impeccably well, and it has surprised everyone. Blair hadn't been quite as surprised as most; she knew Serena and she knew that it was all a matter of finding the right person, the right life, and that's exactly what Serena had done. But she'd resented Serena in the earlier years, when her own life hadn't been adding up the way it was supposed to, when Serena had a baby girl and a man who loved her unconditionally, had pieces that were coming together to make a beautiful picture.
Give me back my future, Blair had thought. You take everything from me.
She sits down on the staircase and cries.
Joey races through the house the next morning, running upstairs as fast as her little feet will take her.
Blair spent the night curled up in a chair, and she stretches her limbs out carefully as she gets up. She's still wearing her clothes from yesterday, and they're wrinkled, but it hardly matters. She blinks heavily as she follows Joey upstairs.
The little girl is in Nate and Serena's room, on the bed next to her older sister, who is squinting as she wakes up.
"Jo, what are you doing?" Blair asks softly from the doorway.
"I thought it was a bad dream," she says softly, looking around with wide eyes.
Blair moves toward them, but Lilah moves before she gets to the bed, opening her arms to her little sister. Blair pauses and Joey stays still for a beat, clearly thinking, before she slips into Lilah's hug. Blair backs up into the doorway again and leans back against the doorjamb, her head tipped back.
The doorbell rings.
She has Bram on her hip, rubbing his eyes sleepily, when she walks downstairs. Eric is in the foyer with Ella at his side, greeting Lily and Rufus, both of whom look incredibly tired and…old. Blair hugs them both around the toddler she's carrying.
"I'm so sorry," she says to Lily, and there is a catch to the words despite her efforts to keep her voice steady.
"So am I, dear," Lily whispers before she pulls back from the hug. Her face is pale but there are no signs of tears.
Bram looks around at all of them and then peers into the kitchen. "Mommy?" he wonders softly, his face crumbling.
She tightens her hold on him and blows out her breath. "I'm sorry, sweetheart."
"Come with me, darling," Lily says, surprising her, reaching out to take Bram. "Oh, my, you're such a big boy now, aren't you?" She moves toward the living room. "Let's talk about your mommy…"
Blair's arms feel empty now and she looks at Eric and Rufus. "Is she okay?"
"First stage of grief is denial," Eric mutters in what Serena used to teasingly call his Shrink Voice.
"We should all have something to eat," Rufus says firmly, and Blair resists the urge to roll her eyes.
"Waffles are not going to bring their parents back," she says, more sharply than she means to.
Rufus hardly even blinks, to his credit – or perhaps to Lily's. "They need to eat, Blair," he says gently. "And so do you and Eric."
There is another knock on the door before she can respond, and Eric swings it open.
"Hey," the guest says in a quiet voice, stepping inside.
Instinctively, Blair takes a step back, a hand flying up to her throat like she's some kind of swooning heroine. "What are you doing here?" she demands.
He looks at her incredulously. "What do you think I'm doing here?"
"You're not needed," she says dismissively, looking away.
"Blair," Eric sighs. "He – "
" – is Serena's stepbrother," Dan Humphrey cuts in, and she can feel it, the way he's still looking her. "And Nate's friend."
"You were," she corrects, looking at him solely to glare at him.
Ella starts to cry, still clinging to Eric's leg, and when he bends down to pick her up she swats at his hands. "No, I want Daddy," she says, her voice high and frantic.
Eric picks her up anyway, talking to her softly as he carries her off to the kitchen, even as she squirms in his arms, starting to sob.
Blair watches them go, feeling tears gather in her own eyes, threatening to spill. She's always been amazed at how Nate and Serena managed to take care of four young children with no nanny and only the occasional baby-sitter, and she doesn't think it's possible to do without them here. The kids are too young and they don't understand, they need – well, they need exactly who they can't have.
A hand comes out to touch her arm then, and she snatches it back. "Don't touch me, Brooklyn," she says hotly, feeling all of sixteen years old again as she blinks away her tears.
Dan opens his mouth to respond, starting to frown, but the sound of a small voice interrupts them, rich with relief, "Uncle Dan!"
Lilah comes rushing past Blair, a flash of blonde hair and blue-and-purple pyjamas. She practically throws herself at Dan, her arms going around him tightly, her face pressed against his stomach. Dan's frown is gone instantly, one of his hands going to her hair while the other rubs lightly at her back.
"It'll be okay," he says softly after a few seconds of silence. "How about brunch, Li?"
Lilah hardly moves but she manages to nod, affirmatively, just once.
Dan looks up at her, lifting one eyebrow. She crosses her arms and stares back at him.
The moment is tense and charged and heavy with the remnants of a relationship that never quite was, but it passes, as all moments do. Dan resumes rubbing Lilah's back, and Blair looks down at the girl.
Just like Serena, she thinks of Lilah, for the millionth time. A soft spot for Humphrey.

- Spoiler:
- “Blair, why didn’t you wait on me?”
She blinked. “What?”
“Why didn’t you wait on me to sort out my thoughts last year in Rome? Did you even tell Chuck what you told me?”
“No, because that was between you and me, Dan. Just as I didn’t discuss my past relationships with you…”
“Blair, you told me that he didn’t have your heart anymore. You told me that you wanted to be with me!”
She laughed, but there was no mirth in it. It was a dry, humorless sound.
“I’d just lost my child, and almost lost the love of my life in an accident. I was inventing God pacts and decided to marry a prince I knew I didn’t love. I forgot that I was a 21 year old college student, and had dreams and ambitions of my own beyond men and marriage. I even told you that I was sad about not being a princess anymore when I was in denial about what Chuck had done for me. I said and did a lot of things last year, Dan, that weren’t really me.”
“I was there for you,” he said, dark eyes turning cold. “I was there for you when no one else was.”
“Yes, you were, Dan. I’ll always appreciate you for that. And I did grow to love you… but it was always a friendship love. We mistook it for something that it wasn’t.”
Dan grabbed both of her hands.
“Blair, we meant something.”
Blair let him go.
“Dan, we meant something, yes. But it’s nothing compared to what I have with Chuck. My husband is everything, and I love him beyond reason. You know that. You even brought us together. Chuck and I would have been married six months earlier had we not been the unfortunate victims of Tripp Vanderbilt’s jealousy of Nate.”
“I don’t get it. How could you love me, and then marry him? We’re polar opposites.”
Her chocolate eyes narrowed as she hissed his words back to him.
“You don’t get it? How could you love Serena, then love me, then love Serena again? We’re polar opposites.” The frost in Blair’s stare now matched his own. “So were you lying when you came to the Victrola reception last summer to wish us well?”
“Yeah, well, I didn’t think your wedding reception was the appropriate moment to confront you about the fact that you used me, Blair.”
“We used each other. Dan, you need to get over this, and now. Graduation is supposed to be a time for celebration and new beginnings. We’ve all made mistakes and learned from them. Stop holding on to the past.”
“You’re one to talk. At least I didn’t marry my past.”
“Actually, I married my past, present, and future. And if you were talking like that to my husband, I can see why he punched you.”
“Blair…”
“Dan, this conversation is over.”
“No, it’s not, Blair. You haven’t given me any kind of explanation for what you did to me.”
“I have nothing more to say to you, Dan. You need to drop this.”
She started to turn from him and rejoin her husband and sister-in-law when his words stopped her short.
“You know, I thought I knew you better than anyone. You were my muse, the heroine of my breakout novel. I would have done anything for you. But now I wonder. You’re not the person I thought you were, Blair.”
Blair sighed.
“Dan, I thought we were still friends. But you don’t know how to end a relationship and move on without making the girl out to be some kind of villain, do you? Did it ever occur to you that sometimes, things don’t work out, and neither party is to blame? That some things are meant to be, and others aren’t, and that’s just the way life works?”
Dan felt incredibly frustrated on top of the pain that he already felt from the punch. Yet her sigh made him feel even angrier.
“Dan, I’m not my husband. I don’t hate you. I’m your friend, and I want you to be happy. I’mhappy…”
“Does he truly make you happy, Blair?”
“No.”
Dan felt a small leap of glee in the pit of his stomach. But Blair’s next words squelched it.
“You didn’t make me happy either. I’m the one who determines my own happiness, Dan. That’s why you and I were never meant to be. You tried to make me happy. Chuck only ever wanted me to behappy, whatever that meant for me. Happiness isn’t something you create for someone else. It comes from a choice to live the best life that you can, every day, choosing the person who knows you inside out and thinks the world of you, no matter what… who lights up every time they see you… who lives for you, thinks of you every second you’re apart, and dreams about you even though you’re lying in their arms all night, and you’d never let them go for anything in the world.
“That’s the life I have with Chuck, Dan. It took me long enough, but I finally chose him. And I choose him every day of our lives, just as he chooses me. That’s my happiness.”
He frowned. Clearly, Blair had grown empty headed since their time together. Chuck Bass had finally brainwashed her, Dan guessed.
“You know, you could have just said ‘yes, Chuck makes me happy’ and spared me the lovey-dovey speech in homage to Chuck Bass of all people.”
“You needed to hear it, Dan. Which is why I don’t think you deserve Serena… not after what you just said to me. She deserves more than that. More than you.”
“Blair, wait…”
“Don’t touch me!”
And Chuck was closing the space between them in an instant, followed closely by Serena. Blair rushed to intercept her husband before another brawl ensued.
“I’m fine,” said Blair, cupping his face in her hands. “He’s had his say. Let’s just go.”
Chuck seemed to calm down at the sensation of her touch. Nevertheless, if looks could kill, Dan Humphrey would have disintegrated into a pile of ashes on the spot.
“Humphrey, you’ve had your ‘closure.’ I trust that you won’t need to close anything with my wife ever again. Although we have to see you at dinner tonight, I meant what I said. Stay away from her.”
Dan couldn’t believe it. He glared as Chuck’s arm wound around his wife’s waist and they walked away. Did Blair actually seem relieved at being rescued? Glad to be away from Dan? That just didn’t make any sense. How could Blair make Dan out to be the bad guy in this situation? He wasn’t a villain. He did nothing wrong!
Dan watched them go for a few seconds longer. Then he felt eyes on him.
He turned around.
Serena was standing there, arms folded. Her eyes were filled with unshed tears. Dan saw that the red rose bouquet had been discarded on the walkway long since, trampled by the crowd.
“Serena, what’s wrong?”
Her beautiful blue eyes closed, and the tears spilled over.
“Everything.”
“Wait, you’re not blaming me for this, are you? I wasn’t trying to… with Blair… Serena, come on! You should know me better than that!”
Serena wiped her eyes, and threw up her hands.
“Dan, I don’t care anymore. I just don’t even care. You know what? I’m going to take the town car ahead to where we’re meeting for dinner, make sure everything’s in place. Why don’t you get your own ride so that maybe you can find the ‘closure’ that you so desperately need?”
“So what, am I disinvited? Serena, stop being so melodramatic.” He closed the distance between them and took her face in his hands. “Now that I’ve closed one chapter of my life, I’m ready to begin another…”
OUCH. She’d slapped him right over the spot where Chuck’s sucker punch landed on his face!
“Dan, on my worst day, I will never be the drama queen that you are. Since our parents are expecting us there, stepbrother, and it’s your graduation day, you’d better show. Good luck explaining what happened to your face to them.”
Serena walked away, then turned to look over her shoulder.
“Oh, and Dan? Congratulations.”

Re: Fanfic
Ej, ale co jak co to jest akurat dobre:
“I’d just lost my child, and almost lost the love of my life in an accident. I was inventing God pacts and decided to marry a prince I knew I didn’t love. I forgot that I was a 21 year old college student, and had dreams and ambitions of my own beyond men and marriage. I even told you that I was sad about not being a princess anymore when I was in denial about what Chuck had done for me. I said and did a lot of things last year, Dan, that weren’t really me.”

Najlepszy jest ten wytłuszczony przeze mnie fragment. Szczególnie w kontekście tego, co pojawia się potem. Żona Chucka. No ludzie...

Re: Fanfic
next season on gossip girl warning ~spoilers~
Dan discovers rats and spiders have been
mating in his hair for years and dies of shock. Nate discovers his
grandfather is actually dead and he’s just been seeing and hearing
things, finally loses control over himself and his good boy image and
becomes a crack addict in ghetto New York City. Lily gets pregnant and
she doesn’t know who the father is but then it actually turns out to be a
half human half monkey baby. Bart Bass and Rufus decide they each
actually don’t love Lily and come out with having a an open gay
relationship. Serena becomes a hippie and marries the 80 year old man
from down the street. Georgina moves to Africa and turns into a baboon.
Then we find out Dan and Serena actually have the same father who is
living in outer space, probably on Jupiter. And finally Chuck and Blair
get married and live happily ever after.
Then we find out all the main characters have been knowingly taking
turns being Gossip Girl the entire show and the joke is on the audience.

Chuck is waiting in front of her home when she gets there late that night, leaning against his limo like he's sixteen years old.
"God!" Blair snaps, startled by his presence when she gets out of her taxi. "Are you stalking me, Bass?"
He shrugs without moving. "I couldn't very well stay in Roquebrune. It was somewhat awkward after you stormed out."
Her jaw clenches a little at his perfect French pronunciation; ridiculously, she resents him for it. "How painful for you," she says flatly.
Chuck adjusts his ascot. "So," he says. "It's Humphrey, then?"
She scowls deeply. "Are you actually stalking me?"
"No. Not unless you want me to be."
"That isn't cute. I don't want anything from you."
He looks at her seriously in the darkness. "I would try again with you."
"Would you?" She crosses her arms. "How nice."
"I want to," he corrects himself. "I love you."
She shakes her head, looking down at the ground. "You don't. You've proven to me that you don't. This little transatlantic chase you've done doesn't prove that you do."
"You're all I want."
Her throat tightens and she feels, for a moment, like she can't breathe. "How dare you," she finally manages to say. "How dare you want me, Chuck." She shakes her head, blinking hard. "Don't you understand that I gave you everything? I did everything for you and – and more. I did more. I gave you everything. There isn't anything left to want so – god, stop. Stop following me, stop talking to me, stop claiming to love me. I don't have anything left for you."
She swallows hard, done with this conversation, done with him, and reaches for the handle of her bag, approaching the doorman. He takes it from her with a polite smile, pretending not to notice her teary eyes, pretending not to have been privy to every word she'd just said.
"Blair," Chuck's voice calls to her just before she walks through the doors.
She turns against her better judgment. "What?"
His eyes bore into hers. "Do you love him?"
She stares at him for a long moment, looking at his forced casual posed, his lean against his limo, and it's like a window right into her past – a window she's ready to close.
"I don't love you," she says.

Blair can't help but stare at her. "Sweetie, why do you think Uncle Dan and I are going to have kids?"
Lilah lifts her head away from the glass and rolls her eyes at Blair in a way she shouldn't have mastered until she was at least thirteen years old. "Because you like each other." When Blair only gapes at her, she adds, "Uncle Dan looks at you the way Daddy used to look at Mom all the time. When you look at people like that you have kids with them."
She opens her mouth but no sound comes out. She takes a breath and tries again, "Lilah, Uncle Dan and I – "
"You kiss," Lilah says. "I've seen you. And after you start kissing someone you start doing the other stuff with them."
"The other stuff?" Blair echoes, her eyebrows lifting. "What, exactly, is the other stuff?"
Lilah shrugs. "The stuff Mommy and Daddy did to get Ella and Jo and Bram. And me," she adds belatedly.
The kids come rushing in then, Bram a half-step later than his sisters, like always, hurrying along on his smaller legs.
